If you’re reading this, you’re likely at the stage of choosing the type of wall farm you want to start in your home, whether it is a house or apartment. Today, I will be going over the various vertical farming products on the market now, along with their pros and cons.
The following products are great visual inspirations for your wall farm, even if you decide not to buy any of them. But before we proceed, however, be sure you’ve done your prerequisite reading on how to build your own wall farm. There is a lot to consider before staring an indoor vertical farm, so be sure you’ve done your due diligence!
⚠️ WARNING
When installing your wall farm, take care to do it correctly! These systems will be super heavy once everything is fully grown, with lots of water and soil, so securing it to studs or concrete is ideal. If you are going to use wall anchors, I would strongly recommend heavy-duty ones.
🛒 Wall planters
I like this system because it provides more space for the soil for each plant, allowing you to grow larger crops and plants. Wall planters are stackable by design and click together like Lego bricks. The above pots will drain into the lower pots once the reservoir is full.
These planters are more expensive, but also are more durable and have a nicer finish. They are an ideal option if you are looking to put your planters in a visible area, such as your front yard.
The downside to these types of planters is that you can’t tell when the reservoir is full, so there is some guesswork involved.
With these pots, you can grow larger crops that need more space around them. If you have a trellis, you can guide your plants up your wall as well.
🛒 36-pocket planter
In my experience using this product, these pocket planters can generate a lot of produce given how little space they use. While it is a very cost-effective solution, it does come with some drawbacks. For one, pocket planters don’t hold moisture that well.
Adding perlite or other porous material to the soil will counteract this. I hung my own planter on a brick wall, and the heat from the wall accelerated the drying, so be mindful of where you place yours.
I’ve seen these used really well in growing strawberries, and other small fruiting crops. If you decide to use a pocket planter, I would recommend an automated watering system to this product.
🛒 Florafelt
Protective waterproof backing Hanging farm – $80+ Standalone system $289 Larger system – $2100+ Wall system $400
Great for both indoor and outdoor growing, Florafelt has a wide selection of vertical farming products, from basic models to designer systems. Florafelt uses quality material, so you know your wall farm will last and that you will get the yield you desire.
🛒 Self-watering vertical planter
This planter makes watering a lot easier: it comes with a large water reservoir that connects horizontally to other planters. These self-watering planters have an overflow valve that drains to the bottom layers. On top of this, it also has a water level indicator that most of these other planters don’t have.
🛒 ZipGrow
This system uses a vertical approach to hanging the plants. ZipGrow has a water reservoir at the bottom that allows you to recirculate the water, which also makes it convenient for indoor growing.

🛒 OPCOM
If you’re a devout Truly Local Farms reader, you would be familiar with this company. OPCOM provides urban farming to many places in the world. Their farms are remarkable by on scale and versatility alone. They are fully functioning hydroponic systems with LED grow lights, and even have cell phone applications to help you monitor your farm from anywhere.
🛒 Verdtech
This company has an interesting approach to growing vertically over a large area. With their sock-like housing for the growing medium, you can really customize the density for what you are growing. Verdtech even has a proprietary racking system to hold the plants. Note that this system is designed for exterior growing, as there is no backing to protect your walls or floor from water damage.
🛒 Naava
This company really went and made a complete living wall product. Although it doesn’t have the lighting needed for growing food, with some modifications, however, this product can be a fertile home for your leafy greens.
With water reservoir, pump, lights, and an enclosed space, this is really a well-thought-out product. They currently have models in a few different sizes, including one with a double-sided partition living wall.
